Fun Birding StoriesBird Watcher's Digest: Special Features: Terrorist BirderIt all started with the Howard County Bird Club website. The site contains photos of nearly every bird ever seen in Howard County. Although photos from many locations are used, photos taken in Howard County are preferred. There was no photo of a rock pigeon taken in Howard County. There was a lovely photo postedit just wasn't from Howard County. So I decided to go take a few snapshots. Read More >> My Annual Traveler: Painted Bunting by Lynn M. ThompsonAt first, I thought it must be a miniature parrot. I'd walked into my bedroom to get a pair of pantyhose while getting dressed for work on a lovely spring morning. Perched there on the rose bush in my indoor cat's viewing garden was the tiniest, loveliest, most colorful bird I'd ever seen in our backyard. It looked to be no more than about five inches from beak to tail. The little thing's head was purple, its chest orange, and its wings a vivid parrot green. During the winter months I was usually lucky enough to have a pair of cardinals as long as the blue jays didn't chase them off. It's a great hobby and one I expected to continue in Florida. Read More >> Remembering Blah by Robert M. ReidI had never been on a Christmas Bird Count—not for lack of interest, but for lack of transportation. But after a few years of birding, I was anxious to give it a try. So I called Tom Hince, the park director of Point Pelee (I live a 40-minute drive from that hallowed mecca) and asked if he knew someone from Windsor who would be “down for the count,” so to speak, with whom I could catch a ride. Read More >> Bird Watching Fun at Any Level by Don Alan HallIt’s bird-watching time. When you’re at parks or public forest areas this time of year, you’ll no doubt notice people with binoculars and bird guides looking for interesting things in the trees and bushes. It seems that more and more people are getting interested in birds. Read More >> |
